His jackassness was reaching epic proportions and Poppy was being so much nicer than I would ever be and then she snapped (thank god!). It seems like blasphemy to even say it but I seriously wanted to grab his neck and shake until his head became dislodged from his ass.because seriously, his head had to be in his asshole to be so blind to how jerkish he was being-always putting her off, being irrational and then justifying it, etc, etc. Shel: Interestingly, once I put my Kindle in the freezer due to the almost thermonuclear meltdown of sexiness, I got to the part where I really DIDNOTLIKE Tyler. 7/4/2023 0 Comments Wicked jessica spotswoodI also liked that the cast of characters she had developed for two books got so much page time. I loved that Spotswood kept with the themes I loved from the series like education for girls and overall feminism. I’ve read some that are fantastic (ALLEGIANT by Veronica Roth, for example) and extremely disappointing (REQUIEM by Lauren Oliver) so I know how to gauge it pretty well, and I’ve got high expectations for these characters I’ve loved since book one. Reading this book was extra special because I had just gotten back from shooting King of the Nerds and read most of it while watching my kids at the pool, I had missed them so much so it was a really fun time of doing my favorite past time with my favorite people.Īs far as series finales go, this was a great one. If you want proof of my insane level of devotion to this series, read my review of the second book in the series, STAR CURSED. If there was ever a book I eagerly awaited it’s SISTER’S FATE by Jessica Spotswood. 7/4/2023 0 Comments Heart berries a memoirIt’s exciting to think that a person might be able to write their way out of seemingly insurmountable personal, cultural and historical trauma. In the hospital, they told me that my first son would go with his father.” My court date and my delivery date aligned. … The ugly of that truth is that I gave birth to my second son as I was losing my first. “I left my home because welfare was making me choose between my baby’s formula or oatmeal for myself,” she writes, admitting, “The ugly truth is that I lost my son Isadore in court. The book opens with the tone-setting “Indian Condition.” Without apology, arrogance or sentimentality, Mailhot divulges key features of her autobiography, including her teenage marriage and decision to leave her reservation. Here, in her fragmentary and interconnected narratives of family love and trauma, neglect and healing, mental illness and recovery, Mailhot offers her own quest for autonomy and self-determination in a milieu in which “Indian girls can be forgotten so well they forget themselves.” In blunt yet lyrical prose, she depicts struggles and stories - of herself, her mother, her father and her grandmother - that are at once singular and sovereign, yet also representative and collective, portraying the travails and quotidian heroism required to be “a woman wielding narrative now,” particularly in a world where “no one wants to know why Indian women leave or where they go.” 7/4/2023 0 Comments A thousand perfect notesNo matter how many bloodied fingerprints dance along the keys of the piano, Beck isn’t capable of bringing the maestro’s notes to life.Ĭrushed under the weight of the world–or in this case the musical notes of the piano, Beck is struggling when August enters his life.Ī girl with a bright smile, a slightly quirky sense of humour, and completely abhors wearing shoes.īeck can’t be involved with August, friends or otherwise, he hasn’t the time and God help everyone if his mother ever found out but.Something about August brings out a musical side of him he’s never felt before. His mother-the well renowned maestro, used to play before she had her tragic accident and could play no more. Review: A thousand Perfect Notes centres around a boy who’s been raised to play music. His hands bleed from the strain and yet he never seems to get the notes right.Īll of this changes when August walks into his life. Review by: Chantelle, LCA Intern for Library HQ His tale of a boy whose search for his missing dog leads him into a magician’s garden was accompanied by striking pencil drawings. His wife and the book illustrator David Macaulay encouraged him to show the drawings to publishers, which led to his first publication, The Garden of Abdul Gasazi (1979). After pursuing a master’s degree at the Rhode Island School of Design, he began his career as a sculptor and drew pictures for fun in his spare time. He rediscovered his childhood love of art while an undergraduate at the University of Michigan and received a bachelor of fine arts degree in 1972. Van Allsburg was born on June 18, 1949, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Van Allsburg won the Caldecott Medal twice during the 1980s. He was gifted with an ability to make narrative and pictures work together to convincingly blur the line between fantasy and reality. American author and illustrator Chris Van Allsburg created several critically acclaimed and popular children’s books. 7/3/2023 0 Comments Ty seidule robert e lee and meNichols, Executive Director of Georgetown Heritage and former Executive Director of The Mark Twain House & Museum. General Seidule will be joined in conversation by Jeffrey L. Through the arc of Seidule’s own life, as well as the culture that formed him, he seeks a path to understanding why the facts of the Civil War have remained buried beneath layers of myth and even outright lies―and how they embody a cultural gulf that separates millions of Americans to this day. Lee and Me deconstructs the truth about the Confederacy―that its undisputed primary goal was the subjugation and enslavement of Black Americans―and directly challenges the idea of honoring those who labored to preserve that system and committed treason in their failed attempt to achieve it. In a unique blend of history and reflection, Seidule’s new book Robert E. From a soldier, a scholar, and a southerner, Ty Seidule believes that American history demands a reckoning. Now, as a retired brigadier general and Professor Emeritus of History at West Point, his view has radically changed. Army, every part of his life reinforced the Lost Cause myth: that Lee was the greatest man who ever lived, and that the Confederates were underdogs who lost the Civil War with honor. She readily provides Cousin Lymon with food and board, and eventually any material object that he desires. In the mid-1930s, several years after Miss Amelia’s divorce, Lymon, a hunchback, comes to Miss Amelia claiming to be a distant cousin. Just as love had changed Marvin, so too did it change Miss Amelia. Several months after the divorce, Marvin reverts back to his initial corrupt ways and is “sent to a state penitentiary for robbing filling stations and holding up A & P stores”. After ten days, Miss Amelia ends the marriage because she finds that she is unable to generate any positive feelings for Marvin. Once married, Miss Amelia is very aloof towards her husband and refuses to engage in marital relations with him. Miss Amelia does not love him but agrees to the marriage in order to satisfy her great-aunt. Two years after Marvin’s reformation, he asks Miss Amelia to marry him. |
